A large-scale search and rescue effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailboats transporting humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Havana.

Naval Rescue Missions Initiated

Mexico has dispatched naval assets and search planes to search for the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than nine total crew members, according to a official statement.

The ships had been projected to reach the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, the statement clarified.

Background of Relief to Cuba

The island nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.

"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are fitted with suitable navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Earlier Humanitarian Delivery

Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of relief supplies to the island.

That boat, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bikes and foodstuffs.

Wider Geopolitical Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to ship critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country began.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k operations postponed in Cuba because of power shortages.

Diplomatic pressure have intensified over the past months, with statements from various leaders underscoring the complicated nature of diplomatic ties.

Reacting to recent proposals, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The Mexican navy said it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to find the boats and secure the safety of the crews.

To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
