A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
During 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured to arrange a place to stay upon arrival, however once I got there, a major event was happening and every single budget hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
Coming from Singapore, I thought maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – only to discover Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open around the clock. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and began walking near the casino, thinking I might spend the evening in an establishment operating all night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for acing the admissions interview the following day, however, being a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more folks like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared lost as a female student noticed me wandering around downtown and inquired if I was OK. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she said I could crash on a spare mattress of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, as that’s where my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: one sandwiches she had from her work shift. I had access to the bathroom and a protected spot and secure to sleep.
With hindsight, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she accepted as a young woman letting a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain very grateful.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I didn’t meet her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish karma has rewarded her good deed abundantly. The world needs more folks with such compassion.
