As Beachgoers Fled Attack, Popular Photo Shows Lifeguard Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her back yard. On a recent weekend night, she, similar to other others in the area, noticed loud noises echoing through the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw signaled a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the avenue, talking to a duo who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she heard someone coming up at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed to Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was alone heading in the path that all the others was trying to escape from, while holding that sizeable pack and unshod … He’s running at something that certainly every instinct would signal you to move in the reverse way.

“Without a second thought, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage Amidst Chaos

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many instances of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, officers and ambulance crews treating numerous victims.

Local Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the scene of the violence becoming a temporary medical station. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, for instance entering the surf to assist people needing help.

After the attack, comments of gratitude were shared. One post expressed gratitude for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always conquer evil”.

The team of beach patrol later shared a communication, saying they were “processing what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful words and encouragement. We are touched by the kindness directed at our responders,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it helps those involved.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional lifeguards, stated that the crew performed exceptionally from the instant the violence commenced until late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many emotional narratives, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a council representative.

“Our lifeguards show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on that evening should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the horror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is important that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
