British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
This news arrives shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
