Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio
The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or imploding.
Cancellieri's Surprising Presence
At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.
He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
