Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed anger after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Recording That Provoked the Controversy

The video footage, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in military or intelligence capacities.

"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to defend and defend this national charter," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can decline illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute directives that violate the statutes or our founding principles."

Trump's Incensed Response

The clip reportedly prompt a furious response from the ex-president.

On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate post, he wrote: "This is really serious, and Dangerous to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials Answer

Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership issued a unified declaration denouncing the statements.

"Partisan aggression has no place in this nation," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our country with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky threats of violence against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these unhinged digital publications and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.

Lawmakers' Defiant Answer

The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a statement.

"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who value this country and swore an vow to safeguard and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that sacred duty."

"What's most telling is that the president views it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the former president's calls for our death and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."

Further Political Responses

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the death of public representatives."

He stated: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and absolutely."

The GOP leader justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of the government advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that is historic in the nation's past."

The GOP official also reportedly told the press that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to examine the language and determine all that."

Administration Reaction

During a administration briefing on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Certainly not."

"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative declared. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to arrange a video message to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to defy the executive's legal commands."

She said: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to casualties, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically encouraging."
