Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria

Security breach at learning center
Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for militant organizations

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.

In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
