I thought I edged it - Alex Carey on overturned decision.

Australian gloveman Alex Carey stated he thought he had feathered the ball when he was given not out on review during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test versus England.

Following his reprieve on 72, Carey proceeded to score a excellent 106 to help the home side post 326-8 at the end of play in Adelaide.

What happened?

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey looked to play a cut to the bowling of Josh Tongue.

England were convinced they had a wicket, thinking they had heard an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

After captain Ben Stokes referred the decision, the technology examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a spike but this came prior to the ball had made contact with the bat.

Gaffaney further stated he was of the opinion there was a gap between the bat and the ball.

Consequently, Carey was allowed to continue.

"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," said Carey.

"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Ongoing Scrutiny

Questions have been raised about 'the Snickometer' throughout the Ashes contest after a number of dubious moments.

Bowling coach David Saker indicated the touring side may take this most recent incident further with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.

"There have been concerns about it for the whole series. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's the situation."

Emotional Century

The ton was his first in Ashes cricket.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in September. Carey's wife was crying in the crowd as the batter celebrated by glancing upward.

"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," said Carey.

"You can probably understand my glance skyward. It's hard not to get emotional. But, no, it was great."

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the wicketkeeper who famously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, leading to a heated final day.

On his reprieve he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."
