New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
