Prime TV Choices: Seven Must-Watch Motion Pictures This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance

The filmmaker's bold satire addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the dreaded aspects of growing older. The veteran actress delivers a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress reduced to hosting a workout series on TV. Forced aside due to her slimy boss Harvey, she turns to an enigmatic and terrifying process titled "The Substance". This creates a youthful duplicate called Sue, resulting in an increasingly vampiric relationship between them. October 17th, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This classic whodunit thriller features the talented actress as Laura, a skilled journalist who takes some time off from writing about global conflict to join a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her spouse, plus additional filthy rich guests. But after an enigmatic female goes overboard during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Available now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries through this clever supernatural story filmed completely from the perspective of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the camera – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the ghostly being, and it looks like guarding her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. October 11th, multiple showings, the Sky channel

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a narcissistic celebrity playing himself who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unique performing skills proves useful. October 11th, evening, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's contained scarefest holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has left the youth on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates a terrible outcome. However, the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with spooky callers giving advice, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals commence capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however the lead actress manages to depict the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's another release from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as sharp like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to identify a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars excel of calm composure, leading to a delightful psychological game of deception or honesty unfolds. The supporting cast join in the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
