Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Secures First Title in Over Two Years
19 of the Russian's twenty-one victories have been achieved on hardcourt
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his initial title for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.
Medvedev, a former number one, has endured a torrid period, managing just one match at the big events and experiencing a setback at the US Open.
The player's varied form on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in specific - caused him exiting of the elite rankings and ultimately separating with former trainer his previous coach.
Now collaborating with his coach and his other coach, Medvedev has gradually progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a hard-fought three-set triumph over Frenchman Moutet.
This marks the player's maiden championship after the Italian tournament and first on a hardcourt since spring of the previous year.
The win also indicates he has won twenty-one titles at 21 different competitions.
"For the first time I am participating in a competition with my children at once, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," said tennis professional Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the initial championship I won when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his past six title deciders, featuring in that event previously this season.
The player's counter-punching strategy and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had caused commentators to wonder if his capacity to compete at the top level was concluded.
But the player has made changes in recent weeks, attempting to advance forward and play positively, supported by an improved serving game.
The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the challenging Frenchman, winning four of the last five points to go ahead.
The competitors swapped service breaks in the following set before the challenger, striving for his initial ATP Tour championship, seized the initiative to push for a final set.
Moutet defended four early opportunities in a close final set before the Russian broke to fifteen to secure the win.
Suitably, Medvedev earned the title with a rally at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to manage a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
