London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
