The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.
After a quarter-century span, not a single part of California is enduring dryness. This landmark event comes on the heels of challenging years marked by below-average rain that worsened fire dangers and pressured its huge agribusiness.
An Update Indicates No Abnormally Dry Areas
The latest assessment from the national drought tracker showed that California in its entirety is free from any level of drought. This development resulted from weeks of significant storms that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville well above their long-term norms.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a weather expert.
Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons
The journey here included intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, leading to widespread flooding, electrical failures, and fatalities. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
As late as late December, regions like Modoc County were considered abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 eliminated those remaining dry spots.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average
Yet, experts warn that the end of drought status should not be confused with complete water security. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the typical level.
This mountain snow, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's usable water as it runs off, is an essential component for long-term water security. Water officials stress that it is not yet time to make predictions for the months ahead.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Even as the official status is entirely green, the next challenge is to maintaining this precious water balance during the coming seasons.
