The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
