The Red Devils Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
